Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)

Hi! I'm Kayla Brooks, I'm 19 years old, originally from Seattle but I'm currently at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA studying design! I grew up playing piano, doing theater, and learning to model.

What is your biggest dream?

My biggest dream right now is to finish my design degree and start a career in the design world!

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

For me, being your own kind of beautiful means feeling beautiful for yourself not anyone else, and working to be the best version of yourself, whatever that may be. For me it's taken me a long time to love my body, especially as someone who has always wanted to model, so being your own kind of beautiful definitely also means loving yourself and your body.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

I started "modeling" in middle school when my friends and I would take photos in the alleyway behind my house. As I got older I started shooting with more professional or aspiring professional photographers. Now at 19 I can say I was recently published in my first magazine, Harness Magazine Issue II!

What is your dream brand to model for?

I think one of my dream brands to model for is definitely Aerie. They have such a positive message and I've been LOVING the campaigns they have been doing.

How would you describe your fashion style?

My fashion style definitely varies day to day. I love finding funky fun things (or cozy sweaters) at the thrift store so that's a big part of my style. I also almost always have a pair of heels on. I'm definitely into trying new things and trying to step out of my comfort zone. I've also been pretty into vintage fashion.

How important is self-awareness and confidence to you in your everyday life?

I think self-awareness and confidence is so important. I've struggled with anxiety since I was in earlier elementary school, so for me being aware of myself and being confident has been so important. It definitely took a really long time for me to be confident in myself both physically but also confident in my abilities as well. That said, now that my confidence is up I think I'm the happiest I've ever been!

What makes you beautiful?

I think something that makes me beautiful is my passion for other people. My goal is always to make people feel better, have better days, and be happy. If there's anything I can do like surprising a friend with a cup of coffee, or sending someone a picture of my dog, I love to do it! I also think being more confident has made me more beautiful because you can see my confidence.

What would you say to another girl your age who is struggling with their confidence?

Instead of focusing on the things you don't like, try to acknowledge the things about yourself you do love, and keep trying to find new things about yourself you love. The more positive attitude towards yourself you have, the more you will accept and love the stuff you maybe didn't like before. And sometimes, you just have to fake it till you make it! For me if I'm feeling kind of self conscious one day, or unhappy or anything I just smile and act confident anyways, and eventually I forget how I was feeling originally!
