Tell us about yourself.

My name is Belle, I’m 18 years old, and I’ll be a freshman in college in the fall. My passions are music, dance, writing, and (of course) modeling. I’m passionate about the environment and I’m always thinking of how I can lessen my impact on our planet. I love playing instruments as well! During quarantine, I’ve been teaching myself ukulele and acoustic guitar to keep myself busy.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

I started dancing when I was 10 years old. In dance, you’re constantly getting pictures taken. As I got older, I had the opportunity to work with an amazing dance photographer. He helped me fall in love with the magic of photos and modeling.

What is your biggest dream?

Helping people! Being 18 is such an uncertain time. Who knows what I’ll be doing in 5 years from now, but no matter where life takes me, I want to make the people around me feel happy, safe and supported however I can.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

Being your own kind of beautiful is defining what makes you love yourself and others and showing that to the world. It’s unapologetically not conforming to traditional beauty standards.

How would you describe your fashion style?

Honestly, I feel like my style changes by the day. The style I feel most comfortable in is a 90’s street style. I love baggy, graphic clothes paired with bandanas or beanies and simple jewelry. Recently, I’ve loved to look at early 2000’s style as well. My dream closet would be very androgenous and have a lot of vintage pieces.

Who or what inspires you?

Women who are unapologetic, even when showing the ‘unacceptable’ parts of themselves. Women who want to push the comfort of others to make change. Some amazing people I’ve been following recently are Rupi Kaur, Michelle Obama, and Greta Thunberg. I’m lucky enough to have my mother and my sister as role models as well.

What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?

Be you! It may feel like you have to act a certain way to fit in, but really, people want you to bring something new and different to the space.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.

I’ve had struggles with mental health for my entire life. I was a very anxious kid, and my anxiety interfered with my happiness often. In middle school, I started to get the help I needed. I still have bad days, but I always remember that fighting anxiety is like a muscle. The more you work it, the easier it gets. Even though my illnesses have caused me great pain and loss, I am grateful to have them. I don’t think I could ever have the compassion I feel for others now if I hadn’t experienced those especially tough times.

What makes you beautiful/handsome?

Below the surface, my beauty comes from my kindness, intelligence, and humor. I always try to find the good in people. True kindness is radiant and I hope I always bring a light and a smile to the people around me who need it.

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

Everyone’s journey to self-confidence is different, It’s not going to happen right away, but with practice, you’ll love the skin you’re in! For me, I had to constantly stop myself from negative self-talk about my intelligence and my appearance. I think it’s also important to realize that the things we nitpick about ourselves, most people never notice.
