Tell us about yourself

Hiya, my name is Liz G.. I'm an Indian-Australian-American woman and am currently a PhD student studying Human-Centered Computing.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

I actually started when I was 18. I applied to a few agencies and began the process but backed out because, at the time, there were not a lot of Indian faces in the American modeling industry. I was super afraid of being type cast. I got back into modeling because I refused to live with regrets! Since then, I've been fortunate to shoot with incredible designers and photographers almost every weekend. I was incredibly lucky that modeling took me to London and Mykonos last fall.

What is your biggest dream?

My dream in modeling is to take part in a Calvin Klein campaign and have my image in Time Square. I'd also LOVE to work with Prada. What would be absolutely amazing: to work alongside the incredibly talented Zendaya. I love the movement and feeling and life she brings to photographs.

Outside of modeling, I hope to use my doctoral degree to create a more fair and equitable world for all living beings.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

To be your own kind of beautiful is to radiate love and confidence from the inside out - to unapologetically you and celebrate all that you are.

How would you describe your fashion style?

It was "hiding" and admiring fashion from afar for a very long time. I felt the need to apologize for being different and embarrassed by my feminity. Now, I'd say it's whatever the hell I want it to be haha I tend to gravitate toward earth tones, although lately I've been slowly introducing more color into my wardrobe. I love fashion from the 60s, 70s, and 90s: 1) because I think it's flattering for my body type, and 2) I think the fashion from those periods were somewhat rebellious and unapologetic and I sort of love that!

Who or what inspires you?

It may sound cliche but, truly, what inspires me most are my parents and my two big brothers. The four of them are the most hardworking, humble, kind, and funny people I've ever met. My parents left everything they ever knew and their whole family in their very early 20s to create the most beautiful life possible for their kids. My brothers are everything I aspire to be! I couldn't ask for better role models and friends.

What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?

"If first you don't succeed, try and try again"

It's a process and it will be hard work and a lot of rejection but if you love it, chase that dream and put in the work. Also, it's an investment: be prepared to spend time and money just as you would with any other profession.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.

There have been countless obstacles over the years, some bigger than others. While I'm sure there are some out there who could relate to some of them, I'd prefer to say that we all struggle and face challenges but it's important to not compare or have them define you. My biggest takeaway has been to acknowledge the ugly parts in life and instead of allowing them to hold you back, learn and grow and always be bringing others up with you.

What makes you beautiful/handsome?

I've always loved that somehow I look exactly like my mom and exactly like my dad, but not like the two of them put together haha the two most gorgeous people that I know - both inside and out!

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

You only get one life. Don't allow the opinions of others to rob you of a rich and beautiful life! There is so much more to living than society's definition of success or beauty or happiness. Listen to your gut and follow your heart. You'll be surprised how much less weight the validation of others will carry!
