Tell us about yourself:

My name is Mery, I am originally from Eritrea/Ethiopia living in Virginia for about 12 years

now. I’m 24 years old. I attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where I earned a

bachelors’ degree in psychology. I love reading, going to the gym, being outdoors and

traveling as well as be around my family and friends. I enjoy learning about different

cultures and talking to different people as well.

Tell us about your modeling experience:

My passion for modeling started when I was younger at the age of 12 but never pursued it.

Being an immigrant and lack of opportunities, you do not think your dreams are possible;

however, I grew to learn that I have the power to make my dreams come true if I believe in

myself and that is exactly what I did now by going after it and working with different

talented photographers. I have experience in working with different fashion styles, glamour,

and being asked to be published as a model. So far it has been an amazing and positive

experience.

What is your biggest dream?

My biggest dream would be to walk for runway during New York fashion Week and work

alongside talented/known designers. I would love to be a full-time model and become a

well-known in the industry.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

I believe to be your own kind of beautiful is to not let societies definition of beauty make

you feel like you have to change anything about yourself. The definition of beauty varies

from people to people so embracing your looks and accepting all of you is what makes you

beautiful. Beauty is not only a matter of external appearance but also refers to the person’s

whole attributes. We are all beautiful in our own ways.

How would you describe your fashion style?

My fashion style varies and changes depending on the season, I enjoy casual edgy looks as

well as mixing and matching different colors. My everyday look is jeans with leather jacket;

satin or vintage-style clothing is also one of my favorites.

Who or what inspires you?

My mother is the person who inspires me the most. She is a strong and hard-working

woman. The amount of sacrifices she made to raise my sister and I is out of this world and

because of that I am always thriving to make her proud.

What advice would you give someone who is just getting started in the modeling industry?

I would advise staying true to yourself and to your work and post on what makes you

comfortable and happy. Not just thinking about the money but how you feel about a certain

work you are doing. Do not dim your light for the purpose of others; keep working hard;

you’ll find your audience and fit in with those who accept you for you and what’s meant for

you will always find you.

What makes you beautiful?

To be able to speak up when something is wrong; not being scared of confrontation and not

let people walk all over me. Ones I was able to establish boundary with others my mindset

improved.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you:

I feel like with everything I have been through in life; my positive outlook and optimism

personality makes me beautiful. No matter what happens in my life I can stay positive and

trust God has better things planned for me.

What would you say to another girl your age who is struggling with their confidence?

I would say when you are struggling with your confidence; to take a moment and think of all

the good qualities you have about yourself that makes you feel good. Doing an affirmation

in the morning in front of my mirror helps me; try every morning telling yourself “I am

beautiful”, “I have a great smile”, etc. You should love yourself because you are absolutely

uniquely beautiful, and you should never let what other people say affect you.
