Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)
My name is Mary Alex, or as most know me as Malex, and I am from Charlotte, North Carolina. I am 24 years old, and working in financial consulting for a small firm in Charlotte. I took an interest in modeling and fashion with my first job in high school interning at a local couture boutique called Capitol. Since then, I decided to work in different industries to build my resume, and found myself working with people and numbers. I decided to pursue my passion for fashion and modeling during COVID to make extra income on the side while working remotely. I found that I wanted to be represented by an agency, and I started my search about a year and a half ago. I prayed hoping for a chance to be noticed and then I received your agency's email.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
I have done only three shoots for small boutiques in Charlotte and in Fort Worth, Texas. I want to practice and throw myself into castings to where I can become more comfortable in front of the camera and stronger as a model figure.
What is your biggest dream?
My dream changes based on what I want vs. what God has in store for me. But, I have found that He has given me a natural sense of courage and determination. With these traits, I have found that I am comfortable being in front of a crowd, public speaking, strong enough to run 6 marathons, and to move away from home for boarding school and college. I know His plan has prepared me to be independent, not only financially but as a woman. Divorce is common in my family, and I refuse to fall into that commonality. Thus, I am dependent on God but remain strong and independent throughout my life and finances.
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
My own beauty is what my dad calls "Out of shower beauty." My family didn't believe in makeup for young girls, so I kept that philosophy until high school. I believe everyone's beauty is their inner and outer-selves, especially without any cosmetic coverage. Some may feel the need to have makeup or surgery in order to feel confident in their beauty, and I do support this. Personally, I have found my confidence in both wearing makeup but mostly when I am without it. My confidence of being able to love myself with either makeup or none has allowed me to let my inner beauty shine through.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I definitely have more of an equestrian and western influence with a hint of femininity in my attire. I have always been told comfort is key and never buy something that is similar to what you already own. If you entered my closet, there is a ton of colors, patterns, cool tones, sneakers and 4in heels. Who ever said tall women cannot wear heels, clearly did not like looking up to tall women.
Who or what inspires you?
My parents inspired me, as they had me late in life. I grew up in a mature household with siblings who were 10 and 11 years older. Their maturity and insight shaped my decisions early on, and you would have found the young me working on our farm, riding horses, shooting hoops, or running cross country & track. Beyond my family, my faith is a major inspiration. I battled cancer for a year, and before that I was almost paralyzed from a riding accident. Both instances I prayed and had peace knowing God was in control, and He inspires me because I do believe I would not be here without Him.
What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?
Be dedicated and own your individuality. I found that being yourself is a whole lot easier than trying to be someone else. I was bullied in my first high school due to being new, and it was to the point I left mid year to boarding school. I do not have any spite towards those girls, because they taught me how to be on my own and accept who I am. Any person who aspires to model must know that there is only one of them. They should let their individuality shine through their photos and castings, because why try to be someone else when there is only one of them?
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
I mentioned some of my challenges in my earlier answers, but getting bullied to transferring to a boarding school was my first huge obstacle. Girls can be mean, and I was shy back in the day. I am happy though to see how I have grown, because no matter how verbal and physical they tried to be-- I won. Their immaturity forced me to live away from home at an early age and developed my independence. This independence allowed me to spend the best four years at my top university in Texas, where I had no family nor friend connections. Without those bullies, I would have never found the courage to move halfway across the country.
Another obstacle was finding out I had a tumor in my head. I am an avid marathon runner and gym goer, and for a while I was having trouble breathing and constantly getting sinus infections. Finally I woke up one night to find myself unable to get any air through my nostrils. After seeing two doctors, they found a massive tumor that had been growing in my nose and had grown into all the nasal cavities in my head. I found out I had been training and working out for nearly a year and half with this invasive mass in my head. I went through chemo and finally they were able to remove the mass once it had shrunk down. I found that I was scared for a few weeks leading up to my surgery, but I felt a sudden peace knowing that God is in control. After the surgery, I did not realize how little oxygen I was getting until I noticed I could breathe through my nose. This experience shapes me to this day, because I know I may not be here without God and the incredible medical staff who changed my quality of life. Something so simple as breathing will show you the magnitude of how much your life can change.
What makes you beautiful/handsome?
I feel the most beautiful when I am doing something with my animals or helping other people. Do not get me wrong, I feel beautiful when I am dressed up for a dance or date night with my boyfriend. I believe beauty does not have to be defined by accessories or clothes; I believe what makes me the most beautiful is when I focus on other people. I get so much joy and love knowing how I can help someone or give love to an animal. Giving joy to people and helping them is what makes me feel most beautiful.
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?
I would tell them to go to a mirror, and put on the clothes they feel the most comfortable in. I would tell them to give a speech about what they fear most, and then explain how to conquer this fear. I found I gained more confidence and self-assurance when I figured out how to conquer my fears. I would put myself in front of those fears and challenges until I felt confident enough to trump them all together. Everyone has confidence. It is the discovery, journey, and triumph of a fear or challenge that allows someone to become confident. Confidence is like a tree growing roots, because confidence can grow and produce into multiple facets of one's life. A girl or a boy my age just needs someone to show them this journey in order to gain the confidence to conquer old fears in order to handle new ones.
