Tell us about yourself

My name is Carmen Hoye and I am from Omaha Nebraska. I am 17 years old, but I’m turning 18 in May. I plan to go to a community college in my area to get my Gen.Eds. done and then transfer to a four year college to get a bachelor's degree and then do an additional two year program to get my masters in communication disorders to become a speech language pathologist (SLP). A fact about me is that I am hearing impaired. I have been since I was three years old. Part of the reason why I want to be a speech language pathologist is because of the fact that I am hearing impaired. I could help kids who are deaf/hard of hearing and have a special relationship/connection with them. I also want to be a SLP because for someone who is hearing impaired, my language is really good and I don’t have any speech impediments, which is something that almost always comes with hearing impairment. I have many hobbies but I have two main ones. I absolutely love to read. It’s so relaxing when I can just lay around and read a book all day. I also love to dance. I was involved in competitive dance from age 6 to age 10 and I now do varsity show choir at my high school.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

My only modeling experience is getting my senior pictures taken. I also take pictures for Instagram, but I’m not sure that really counts as a modeling experience.

What is your biggest dream?

My biggest dream is to live life with intention and a purpose. That means living a life with connection, adventure, challenges, growth, victories, service of others. Making a positive impact on people’s lives is something I hope to do in the future.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

Being your own kind of beautiful means you stand out in your own way. It means you're one kind of beautiful. Being you makes you beautiful.

How would you describe your fashion style?

My choice of clothing most days is to be comfortable, but that’s mostly just for going to school. On days I dress up, I usually wear clothes that give off the vibe of trendy with a feminine touch.

Who or what inspires you?

My mom inspires me the most. My family has gone through some very tough times and she’s always been the rock of the family. She’s strong, mentally and physically, she’s wise, and she’s such a happy human being despite everything we’ve gone through. We have a very close relationship and my mom tells me that I am her mini me.

What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?

Don’t stress. Be you and just have fun posing for a camera. Be confident and forget about the negative things.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.

My hearing impairment has been and will always be an obstacle for me. I struggle with understanding people sometimes. The thing that people tend to not understand is that I can hear someone speak, but I can’t understand what they are saying. It’s very important that I can lip read when someone is talking to me because it helps me understand when someone is talking to me. It also matters if someone is speaking clearly too. If they are just mumbling and/or speaking too fast, then I won’t understand what they’re saying at all. This has shaped me to become a better lip reader, but also read social cues/body language REALLY well. It’s something I’m really good at. My friends complain how I can always catch them in a lie because I can always tell when they’re lying.

What makes you beautiful/handsome?

I think my fun and sweet personality is what makes me beautiful. My personality is what makes me, me and I think that’s what makes me beautiful. But I have features that make me beautiful too. I’ve always loved my eye color and shape. My friends have also told me that my eyes and facial structure are amazing. I also really love my smile. Sometimes my own smile makes me smile bigger. I thank god for braces because they changed my entire appearance. I also like my leg shape. I’m lucky to have skinny ankles, but I also have toned muscle on my thighs and calves.

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

Do what you want. Do things that will make you happy, but you also have to push yourself. If you can, fix the things that are making you feel insecure. Being able to say “I’ve worked hard to get to where I am now” is such a good feeling because you feel so accomplished. So yes, it’s gonna be hard, but you're going to get there in the end.
